The Threat

Herod Antipas
Ruled over regions of Galilee and Perea
Known for conflict with John the Baptist… Denounced an incestuous relationship Herod had with his brother’s wife”
“At the time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead” (Matthew 14:1-2)
The Pharisees
Jewish religious elite… Known for condemning sin in others
Pretends Protectors
“Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with Herodians how they might kill Jesus.” (Mark 3:6)
“Go tell that fox…” – Crafty, sneaky, avoids conflict.
The Response
“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has the power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” (Luke 12:4-5)
“third day” / “reaching my goal” / “no prophet can die outside Jerusalem”
The Desire
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” (Luke 13:34
“Look, your house is left to you desolate…” (Luke 13:35)

Uncertainty
Disunity
The Response
Fear God, not man
Focus on the mission
Lean on God’s faithfulness
The Desire
Be unified… Bound by love
